Haitians Still in Anguish 10 Years After Earthquake
10 years after the worst disaster to hit their nation in generations, Haitians are still in anguish and anger over their government’s lack of progress in rebuilding the country. They know that Billions of dollars was donated to help rebuild their lives but all most Haitians received were sacks of Rice and bottled Water. Today, they are demanding to know what happened to all the money but as the questions of grieved Haitians echo in unison, the answers always come back the same. Some say the money was stolen by Haiti’s corrupt politicians while others say corrupt Aid organizations are equally to blame. Whatever the real answer is most Haitians are even more upset that there seems to no-one willing to hold the guilty accountable.
According to reliable accounting, in the weeks and months immediately after the Earthquake, at least 15 Billion US dollars was raised worldwide through donations to charities and government pledges. This money was then funneled to a few well-known charities and organizations for management and distribution. Aid money went into helping the Haitian government rebuild essential infrastructure such as Water, Sewage, and Hospitals. Some of the money went into temporary housing, food, and clothing. Unfortunately, when all the accounting was assessed, a vast majority of the Aid money is still unaccounted for.
This is why on this, the 10th anniversary of the Earthquake, many Haitians are extremely upset at their government, certain Aid organizations, and the United Nations for mis-management and a general lack of respect for Haiti. They recognize that for centuries Haiti has been considered a failed nation. Haiti was punished economically by Europe for overthrowing slavery in 1803. It then went on to be colonized by several nations before being ruled by an autocratic family through the latter half of the 19th century. Haitians democratically elected their first president in 1990 only to have him overthrown by a Coup sponsored by the United States one year later.
Haiti’s ongoing turmoil is not just due to natural disasters and circumstance. Some Haitians know this but most don’t. Those who know about the real factors that keep Haiti in despair, know that its mostly geo-political. Simply put, there are nations and economic organizations that dictate world politics solely for economic gain. These nations and economic organizations twist every circumstance, natural or un-natural, into economic opportunity. So, when most Haitians are demanding to know where all the AID money went, some of us already know.
The majority of Haiti’s AID went into the pockets of self-righteous people who love to engage in social engineering. For instance; let’s say America pledged 25 million dollars to help Haiti recover from the Earthquake. They send the money but they tie a string to it by telling the Haitian government that only American experts are qualified to do the rebuilding. Unfortunately, those experts don’t come as part of the Aid, they have to be paid. In little time and with little done, those foreign experts quickly eat up the AID money and leave Haitians to fend for themselves.
What little money was left after the foreign AID vultures flew out of Haiti was then swindled away by corrupt Haitian politicians. Average Haitians, who lost everything they owned, were left to rebuild their own lives. Haitians are a resilient people who have suffered much but have always found ways to survive. They are not lazy beggars who love misery as many foreign media loves to portray. They know corruption when they see it so when we see Haitians demonstrating over the fact that they were used by corrupt AID organizations and governments, take their word for it.
