“We Are Gabriel"
Join us at the 20th Annual Gabriel Gathering!
Each year on Oct. 10, the Sacred Ground Historical Reclamation Project (sacredgroundproject.net) of the Virginia Defenders hosts a community gathering at Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom African Burial Ground. Oct. 10 was the date in 1800 when the great slave rebellion leader Gabriel was executed at this site. We gather to honor Gabriel and all those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom, to celebrate more than 20 years of learning the history of this sacred ground and to rededicate ourselves to reclaiming and properly memorizing Shockoe Bottom, once the epicenter of the U.S. domestic slave trade.
We’re also celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality!
This year’s commemoration will feature three nights of light art, video projections and history presented in collaboration with the acclaimed artists who famously projected images onto the Lee statue on Monument Avenue during the Black Lives Matter uprising of 2020.
Sat., Oct. 8 - Light Projections at 7 pm
Sun., Oct. 9 - Light Projections at 7 pm
Mon., Oct 10 - Main Event at 6:30 pm with Light Projections
Join us! (And please share this event page!)
This year's event is made possible in part by collaborations with Recontextualizing Richmond (reclaimingthemonument.com/the-re-contextualizing-richmond-project), including Richmond artist Sandy Williams IV (sandywilliamsiv.com), and with Networked Public Spaces, a research project of the UVA Next Cities Institute.
