Shedding the Savior Mentality
Hello Blaqsbi-ans.
As you may or may not have noticed, I took a short sabbatical from social media for a few weeks. I’m learning to shed the savior mentality that I instinctively acquired in noticing that Black people are in serious trouble. I don’t know what made me think that Black people cannot be saved by the things that we cling to now, which are religion, freedom, and Human Rights. Perhaps in my younger days I simply didn’t notice our collective despair because my mind was pre-occupied with enjoying life.
Life goes on but what did I miss? Not much I suppose. The Cold War between the world’s two super powers goes on. America thought they had destroyed Russia in the 1990s but Russia found a way to return the favor in a way more effective way. They’ve pulled down the pants of Uncle Sam to expose his dirty century’s old unwashed drawers and Uncle Sam simply said “what, you think we’re innocent? Thanks to Russia for helping us rediscover our true nature. Hopefully we can put this fake animosity behind us and rule the world together.”
I’m learning to “stay in my lane” but when you live right next door you can’t help but notice America’s departure from the path toward Sanity. As more and more Americans take advantage of their right to bear Arms, a “trigger happy” way of life is also taking hold. Mass shootings and murders are increasing every day and the Cops are still killing Black people without impunity. Abortion Rights are being revoked and white supremacists are also hell-bent on banning any knowledge and books that will make them feel guilty about their unethical history.
Black people still can’t define their identity or decide what direction to take. Some of us in the diaspora want to be Indians, Hebrews, Arabs, Moors, or New Black while a lot of Africans on the continent still believe that anywhere is better than Africa. Some Black intellectuals believe that Black Americans are a “savior-class” of people based on Black America’s prominence in dictating Black cultural awareness in the information age. The truth is that we’re all a product of other people’s reality; either through colonial indoctrination, apathy, cowardice, unaccountability, or lack of knowledge.
While we continue to ignore our own history and accept white Archeologists unethical explanations of our own origins, many of us will be fascinated by images of the universe being obtained by the James Webb Telescope. I’m fascinated too but I don’t lose perspective. I know that religion is too unethical to be true, I know that science cannot make conclusions and I know that life is what we make it. So hey, "keep doing you” but remember, always listen to your own conscience.
