Happy Independence Day Jamaica
August 6th 2022 marks the 60th independence anniversary of Jamaica, the land of my birth.
Jamaica is one of the most well-known countries in the Caribbean thanks to several things such as it’s beautiful and very popular beaches, its Reggae music, and its very fast runners.
The Island was originally inhabited by people known as Arawak Indians before European explorers, pirates, and colonizers took it over starting in the 1400s. It was held under the rulership of several European empires until it gained independence from the British in 1962 but it still remains a part of the British Commonwealth.
Today, Jamaica flourishes as a multi-racial democracy with mixed-race or non-black people holding financial and political power and Black people trying to reap the benefit of generations of slavery and colonial hardship.
Everyone gets along though because no matter what race you are, Black, Chinese, White, Arab, or Indian, once they get a taste of the culture of Jamaica, they soon consider themselves Jamaicans. Thus the motto; Out of Many, One People.
