🤬 WRITTEN BY THE PRESIDENT OF LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY in 1961:

"Though we did not like it, we accepted Negroes as students," the LSU president wrote to the chancellor of the University of Texas in a 1961 letter that reveals how high-ranking university officials maintained apartheid even after the court ordered desegregation.

"At no time has a Negro occupied a room with a white student. We keep them in a given area and do not permit indiscriminate occupancy...Our Negro students have made no attempt to attend social functions, participate in athletic contests, go in the swimming pool, etc.

If they did, we would, for example, discontinue the operation of the swimming pool."

Background: In the fall of 1961, UT asked high-ranking officials at other universities how they handled integration of extracurriculars and dormitories.

Should an African-American request to participate in athletics "I think I could find a good excuse why he would not participate."

This letter was found at the Briscoe Center's Chancellor's Office Records; Box 85… Folder "Desegregation 9/1/60-8/31/62".

WHY CAN’T OUR PEOPLE REALIZE WE NEED OUR OWN!
