💔 NEVER LET GO – Episode Five: “The Wounds Beneath Her Skin”

Ivy’s house happened to be a poorly built one-room apartment. Other houses stood closely beside and behind it, as though squeezing it into suffocation. Stanley followed Ivy in silence, his eyes scanning the cramped environment while his mind stayed fixed on retrieving his envelope. When they arrived, he waited outside while Ivy slipped into the house to get it.

A few seconds later, the air cracked with the sound of a woman’s furious voice.

"And who the hell are you to get home this late? Are you that worthless to me? Common to go to the nearby market and get me pepper and onions, you couldn’t act like a human being with blood in her veins. Heavy thunder will strike you today. Useless girl!"

Before Stanley could process what was happening, the woman’s harsh words turned into violent slaps and the sting of a cane. Ivy’s screams pierced through the frail wooden walls. Stanley froze, torn between shock and anger. When the shouting grew unbearable, he made a move toward the door, only for Ivy to burst out, running for her life. Her face was streaked with tears, her skin covered with fresh bruises, and her torn dress barely covered her body.

“Jesus! What is the meaning of this? What exactly is going on here?” Stanley demanded, staring at her in disbelief.

Just then, the woman stormed out of the house, her eyes blazing and a long cane clutched in her hand.

“So this man is the reason you decided to spend the whole night at the market, right? But don’t you worry, I will show you...”

“Come on, will you shut up, you godforsaken Jezebel!” Stanley’s fury erupted. “Look at this shameless madwoman! How could you be such an idiot and a disgrace to womanhood? You gave this young girl just one hundred and fifty naira to trek under the hot sun just to buy pepper and onions, and you still have the audacity to torture her? You’re lucky I’m even holding myself back, because I can sue you right now for abuse! Silly demented crazy ass woman!” Stanley flared vituperatively, his eyes blazing with fury.

Ivy stood frozen, trembling. She hated that Stanley’s outburst would only make things worse for her. The woman sneered, her lips curling into a devilish smile.

“I don’t blame this useless man for talking nonsense,” she spat. “But as for you, Ivy, this is the final bus stop. From today onward, I don’t want to see your shadow in this house again. Otherwise, consider yourself dead. Worthless pig!”

Ivy fell to her knees, begging for mercy.

Stanley stared at the woman scornfully. “So this is the slum you call a house? You’re about to kill a girl because of this refuse dump? If you saw my mansion, you would probably kneel down and beg me to let you live in one of my toilets. You’re a wicked soul, a disgrace to humanity!”

The woman hissed and pointed her cane at him. “Harlot of a man! You think I don’t know your type? Trying to seduce this girl because of your stinking money? I don’t have time for your nonsense. As for you, Ivy, if I go inside and still see your things there, I’ll burn everything to ashes!” She stormed back inside, still muttering curses.

Stanley turned to Ivy, only to find her still kneeling and crying.

“You’re unbelievable. Are you that daft or senseless? A wicked woman just kicked you out, and you’re still kneeling there crying for forgiveness? My friend common get the hell up from that stinking place and pack your so called things. And don’t forget my envelope while at it,” he barked. “I can’t believe my envelope actually spent the night in this pigsty!” Stanley ranted more.

“But sir… where will I go? I don’t know where to go from here,” Ivy said tearfully.

“No, you will go to the mosque and pray. Asking me silly question. Now move!” Stanley ordered, his tone sharp and impatient.

Ivy hesitated at the doorway, her body shaking.

“She will beat me… I’m scared,” she whispered shakily.

“Beat you for what? Go inside, let me see her try it. I’ll show her the strength of a man today. Let her just touch her miserable finger on you...then I will ensure she spends the night at the hospital today,” Stanley said firmly.

Ivy took a deep breath and walked in slowly. Surprisingly, the woman did not touch her. She only stood watching with wicked eyes as Ivy packed her few belongings. Minutes later, Ivy placed them in the car’s boot, her eyes red and swollen. Stanley entered the car, his face tight with frustration.

“I’m confused about something. For how long have you been living with that monster?” he asked very sternly.

“Since I was eight years old,” Ivy replied softly much to the surprise of Stanley.

“What about your parents? Why did they allow you to live with her?”

“I don’t know my parents. I grew up in an orphanage. There was a man who used to visit often. He liked me a lot and eventually adopted me when I was five. But his wife never wanted me. She hated that her husband loved me more than her own children. When he traveled, she tortured me badly… once, she even burned my skin with a pressing iron. I ran away and met Madam Joy—the woman you just saw. At first, she treated me well, but everything changed when people began to admire me more than her daughter, Ene. I was more brilliant and beautiful. After I passed my exams and her daughter failed, she refused to let me go to the university. When Ene later passed and got admitted, Madam Joy’s hatred for me grew worse. I became her punching bag,” Ivy said, tears streaming freely.

Stanley sat still, anger and pity warring within him. Her story struck deep, but he also felt she should have fought harder for her freedom. He took his envelope quietly, said nothing more, and drove off into the dim evening light—his thoughts heavy, his heart uncertain.
