Misty Copeland has made history in ballet; now she's ready to impact the stage.

Misty Copeland made history in ballet. Now sheThe Journey of Misty Copeland: A Journey of Perseverance and Inclusion

In a world where dance is often seen as an escape from the chaos of life, Misty Copeland found her place. This journey began when she was just 13 years old, growing up amid uncertainty and instability. She learned to dance not for its own sake but to serve others, to step into this beautiful world and express herself in ways that she could as a child. To me, it was clear that the art of ballet wasn’t about perfect lines or technical feats—it wasn’t about the aesthetic and what was on the outside. It was about storytelling, being able to step into this beautiful world and express myself in ways that I couldn’t as a child.

As diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives face growing criticism, Copeland said she believes this is the right time to step away from performing. She said progress in ballet must also happen behind the curtain—more than just seeing yourself on the stage. It’s what's being implemented behind the scenes, like how schools implement training programs for teachers who look like the children they’re serving.

She also announced her retirement as a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre (ABT). "I always said to myself, like, I'm not gonna be that ballerina that they're pulling off by the pointe shoes, like 'Girl, it's time.' You know, that I wanna be able to say, you know, like, I feel good in this moment, and now is time for me to bow," she said. "I think it's progress. And that, to me, is—so thrilling and so exciting to be able to stay connected to this company that has been everything to me."

Her retirement marked a significant milestone in her career. She had spent 25 years at ABT, and now she would return to the stage for the first time since her last performance. It was a moment of closure and gratitude—returning to the world where she could express herself with passion and purpose.

Misty Copeland’s journey is one of perseverance and inclusion. She changed the art form in ways that were beyond just dancing—it was about storytelling, being able to step into this beautiful world and express myself in ways that I couldn’t as a child. Her retirement as a principal dancer at ABT was not just a moment for her but a moment for the company, reflecting its commitment to diversity and inclusion.

As we reflect on Misty Copeland’s journey, it becomes clear that perseverance is not just about dancing—it’s about being part of a world where dance can serve as a bridge between the past and the future. It’s about finding beauty in the chaos and finding purpose in the pursuit of excellence.
