Cairo Hosts Crucial Peace Talks as Sudan War Nears Three-Year Mark

With Sudan war nearing three years, Cairo becomes the latest venue for peace push - Face2Face AfricaAs the conflict in Sudan edges closer to its third year, diplomatic efforts have intensified in Cairo, where regional leaders and international mediators are pushing for a nationwide humanitarian truce. The war has ravaged the country, displacing thousands and leaving millions in dire need of aid.

Egypt and UN Urge Humanitarian Truce
In a joint statement, Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Ramtane Lamamra, the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy for Sudan, emphasized the need for an immediate humanitarian truce. They warned that any scenario fragmenting the country or eroding its sovereignty would be unacceptable.

Regional Actors Share Understanding on Humanitarian Truce
According to Abdelatty, regional actors now share a common understanding of the need for an immediate humanitarian truce. Proposals include limited withdrawals by warring parties and the creation of safe corridors to allow aid to reach civilians.

US Support for Humanitarian Efforts
The US has been actively involved in mediating a humanitarian truce, with Massad Boulos, the senior US adviser for Arab and African Affairs, stating that over 1.3 metric tons of humanitarian supplies reached el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, on Wednesday through American-led mediation.

Egyptian President Emphasizes Importance of Closer Coordination
In a separate meeting with Boulos, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi stressed the importance of closer coordination between Cairo and Washington to stabilize Sudan. He expressed appreciation for US President Donald Trump's efforts to end the war.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
The conflict has left thousands displaced, with at least 19 civilians killed in ground operations in Jarjira, North Darfur, on Monday. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that over 8,000 people have been displaced from villages in North Darfur.

As the war in Sudan nears its third year, Cairo's peace talks offer a glimmer of hope for a humanitarian truce. Regional leaders and international mediators must continue to push for an immediate ceasefire, ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most. The fate of Sudan hangs in the balance, and the world watches with bated breath as diplomats work tirelessly to bring an end to this devastating conflict.
