Eritrea's Alleged Arming of Ethiopian Rebels Sparks Tensions

Ethiopian police find 50,000 ammunition rounds sent to rebels by Eritrea | AfricanewsIn a shocking revelation, Ethiopian police have uncovered a massive cache of ammunition sent by Eritrea to arm rebels in the country. The discovery has sparked fresh tensions between the two Horn of Africa nations, which had been enjoying improved relations until recently.

Ethiopian Police Seize 50,000 Rounds of Ammunition
According to a statement by Ethiopian police on Facebook, they have seized over 56,000 rounds of ammunition in the Amhara region. The ammunition was transported in a lorry and was intended for the Fano militant group, which took up arms against the federal government in 2023.

Eritrea's Involvement Raises Questions
The police statement revealed that the ammunition was sent by Eritrea and transited through the northern region of Tigray with the assistance of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). This has raised questions about Eritrea's involvement in supporting armed groups in Ethiopia, particularly in the Amhara region.

Tensions Between Ethiopia and Eritrea
The discovery comes at a time when relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea had been improving. In 2018, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki signed a peace agreement, marking the end of decades-long tensions between the two countries. However, recent developments suggest that old rivalries may be resurfacing.

Ethiopia Accuses Eritrea of Destabilization
In October, Ethiopia accused its neighbor of attempting to destabilize the country by financing armed groups. Eritrea denied the claims, calling them a 'sham.' The latest discovery has reignited concerns about Eritrea's intentions and its role in regional politics.

The seizure of 50,000 rounds of ammunition sent by Eritrea to arm rebels in Ethiopia highlights the complex web of tensions between the two countries. As relations continue to deteriorate, it remains to be seen whether this latest development will mark a return to the old rivalries that had plagued the region for decades.
