Burkina Faso's Former Leader Arrested in Togo and Expelled

Former Burkina leader and alleged coup plotter arrested in Togo and expelled | AfricanewsIn a dramatic turn of events, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, Burkina Faso's former transitional president, has been arrested in Togo and expelled. This development comes as no surprise to those familiar with the complex web of power struggles and coup plots that have plagued the West African nation.

Damiba's Rise and Fall
Damiba rose to power in 2022 after ousting President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré in a military coup. However, his tenure was short-lived as he was himself overthrown by the military leader Ibrahim Traoré just eight months later. Since then, Damiba has been accused of numerous coup and assassination plots while in exile in Togo.

Foiled Assassination Attempts
Ouagadougou authorities claim to have foiled an attempted assassination of Traoré planned for January 3rd. A number of alleged conspirators have appeared on state TV, confessing to acting on orders from Damiba. Security officials also reveal that Damiba had planned targeted assassinations of civilian and military figures, starting with Traoré.

Arrest and Expulsion
Damiba was arrested in Lomé last week and tried for the attempted destabilization of Burkina Faso. He was subsequently taken to the airport, although his destination remains unknown. This development marks a significant blow to Damiba's plans for power and control.

The arrest and expulsion of Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba in Togo serves as a stark reminder of the complex dynamics at play in Burkina Faso. As the nation continues to navigate its tumultuous past, it remains to be seen what the future holds for those involved in these power struggles.
