The Pen is Mightier Than the Algorithm: One Teacher's Quest to Keep AI at Bay

A Texas teacher broke out the old-school pen and paper to kick AI out of her classroomIn a world where artificial intelligence is increasingly being integrated into classrooms, one Texas teacher has taken a bold stance against its influence. Chanea Bond, an American literature and composition teacher at Southwest High School in Fort Worth, has made the unconventional decision to ditch digital tools and revert to the old-school method of pen and paper.

The AI Experiment
Bond's journey began when she assigned her students a task that required them to use AI to craft a thesis. The results were eye-opening, with many students struggling to distinguish between the accuracy and quality of the AI-generated work. This led Bond to realize that relying on technology was undermining the development of fundamental skills in her students.

The Shift to Analog
Determined to strengthen her students' core skills, Bond made the decision to switch to handwritten assignments and journaling. Her approach has been met with positive results, as students are now able to think critically and build clear arguments on their own. 'Where are those skills going to be built, if not here?' Bond asked in an interview with NPR.

A Strong Foundation Matters
Despite questions from others about whether her students might fall behind without the aid of technology, Bond remains convinced that a strong foundation is essential. 'I know that when my students leave my class that they know how to think and they know how to write,' she said confidently.

Chanea Bond's innovative approach to teaching has sparked an important conversation about the role of technology in education. As AI continues to transform classrooms, it's refreshing to see a teacher who values the importance of human skills and critical thinking. By embracing the old-school method, Bond is giving her students the gift of a strong foundation that will serve them well beyond their academic years.
