WNBA Star Erica Wheeler's Personal Battle with Cervical Cancer Sparks Awareness Campaign

WNBA star Erica Wheeler lost her mother to cervical cancer—now she’s urging Black women not to skip screeningsFor WNBA star Erica Wheeler, the pain of losing her mother to cervical cancer is still a raw wound. But instead of letting it define her, she's using her platform to encourage Black women not to skip screenings and take control of their health.

A Personal Tragedy Becomes a Call to Action
Wheeler's mother passed away in 2012 due to cervical cancer, but if she had known the importance of regular screenings, things might have been different. Now, Wheeler is partnering with Hologic to spread awareness about the preventable nature of cervical cancer and the importance of staying up-to-date with routine screenings.

The Statistics Are Alarming
According to Dr. Jessica Shepherd, a board-certified OB/GYN, Black women are more likely to be diagnosed at later stages and 2x more likely to die from cervical cancer compared to white women. The good news is that nearly all cases of cervical cancer are preventable through routine screening by a doctor with Pap and HPV tests.

Breaking Down Barriers to Care
Dr. Shepherd emphasizes that lack of insurance should never be a barrier to preventive care, as many women can receive free or low-cost cervical cancer screening options at community health centers, local health departments, federally qualified health centers, and nonprofit clinics.

Wheeler's Mission: To Encourage Women to Take Control
Through her partnership with Hologic's 'Ultimate Defense' campaign, Wheeler hopes to use the power of sports to spark conversations between patients and their healthcare providers about cervical cancer. She wants women to know that they have the tools available to combat and treat it, and that staying up-to-date with routine screenings is key.

Erica Wheeler's personal battle with cervical cancer has turned into a mission to educate and empower Black women to take control of their health. By spreading awareness about the preventable nature of this disease and encouraging regular screenings, she hopes to make a difference in the lives of countless women.
