Reclaiming the Promise of '40 Acres': A Black Woman's Grocery Store in Chicago

How a Black woman’s grocery store in Chicago is reclaiming the promise of In a powerful testament to community resilience and determination, a Black woman-owned grocery store is rising from the ashes in one of Chicago's most overlooked neighborhoods. Liz Abunaw's Forty Acres Fresh Market is not just a place to buy groceries; it's a beacon of hope for economic empowerment and food equity.

A Legacy Born from History
The store's name, 'Forty Acres,' is a nod to the post-Civil War promise made to formerly enslaved Black Americans. Land, economic footing, and a real chance at generational wealth were promised, but never fulfilled. Abunaw's vision is to respond to that history with her own: a grocery store that provides access and ownership in a community that has been overlooked for far too long.

A Store Born from Passion
Abunaw didn't step into this venture blindly. She previously worked at General Mills, where she learned the operational side of food retail. With her expertise and passion, she redesigned the space to feel welcoming and timeless. The exterior now features bold metal paneling and angular windows that flood the space with light, while inside, the aesthetic blends a modern general store with the charm of a 1950s ice cream shop.

A Game-Changer for Food Inequity
Forty Acres Fresh Market is currently the only full-service grocery store in Austin. For years, residents had to drive to other neighborhoods or even into the suburbs to shop for groceries. Now, it's walkable. Abunaw believes that her store can be a powerful tool for food access, local jobs, and keeping dollars circulating in the community.

A Legacy of Black-Owned Grocers
Abunaw acknowledges that she's not the first Black-owned grocer. She sees herself as building on a legacy that came before her. At a time when conversations about racial wealth gaps, food inequity, and community investment are front and center, Forty Acres Fresh Market stands as a visible response.

Forty Acres Fresh Market is more than just a grocery store; it's a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. As Abunaw continues to build on her legacy, she reminds us that with determination and passion, we can reclaim the promise of '40 acres' and create a brighter future for ourselves and our communities.
