New Era Dawns for Black-Led Education Foundation as Leadership Transitions and Expands Board

Black-Led Education Foundation Enters New Era With Leadership Transition and Expanded BoardIn a significant milestone, the Dorothy I. Height Education Foundation (DIHEF) has embarked on a new chapter with the appointment of Constance Berry Newman as its president, succeeding Alexis M. Herman. This transition marks a pivotal moment for the organization, which has been dedicated to empowering students from underrepresented communities since its inception in 2004.

A New Era of Leadership
Constance Berry Newman, a seasoned diplomat and lawyer with seven presidential appointments, has taken the reins as president of DIHEF. With a career spanning over three decades, Newman has been deeply committed to the causes closest to Dr. Dorothy I. Height's heart – civil rights, poverty, and expanding opportunities for those often overlooked. Her appointment is seen as a testament to her tireless public service and dedication to empowering students from underrepresented communities.

Expanded Board of Directors
The Foundation has also welcomed two distinguished new board members: Bishop Leah Daughtry and businessman Jarvis Stewart. Bishop Daughtry, who serves as Principal of On These Things, LLC, brings her expertise in strategic planning, project management, and community engagement to the table. Jarvis Stewart, Founder and CEO of Highland Poe, brings his experience as a senior advisor to Labor Secretary Herman during the Clinton Administration and as an advisor to Maryland Governor Wes Moore.

Honoring Dr. Height's Legacy
The new leadership team is committed to continuing the work of Dr. Height and her successor, Alexis M. Herman. Newman expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead DIHEF, stating that she feels a deep sense of responsibility to honor Dr. Height's vision for future generations. Bishop Daughtry echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of keeping Dr. Height's legacy alive by ensuring that the doors she opened remain open and wider than ever.

A Commitment to Empowering Students
DIHEF has been a springboard for students who need additional financial support to pursue higher education. The organization awards 'bridge scholarships' – targeted assistance covering tuition gaps, books, fees, meal tickets, and other practical needs for students already accepted to colleges and universities. Reflecting Dr. Height's belief that academic records alone do not capture a student's full promise, DIHEF places special weight on volunteerism and community engagement when evaluating applicants.

As the Dorothy I. Height Education Foundation embarks on this new era of leadership, it is clear that the organization remains committed to its mission of empowering students from underrepresented communities. With Constance Berry Newman at the helm, Bishop Leah Daughtry and Jarvis Stewart joining the board, and a renewed focus on Dr. Height's legacy, DIHEF is poised for continued growth and success in its pursuit of creating a more equitable education system.
