The Women Behind the Vision: How Mothers and Grandmothers Inspired These Beloved Black-Owned Brands

The women behind the vision: How mothers and grandmothers inspired these beloved Black-owned brandsBehind every great brand is a story of love, legacy, and inspiration. For six Black founders, their mothers and grandmothers were the driving forces behind their successful businesses. From fine jewelry to organic skincare, these entrepreneurs are paying homage to the women who paved the way for them.

Didi Rose Jewelry: A Heritage-Driven Brand Rooted in Nigerian Culture
Benedicta Awere-Malik's grandmother was her blueprint for life. She instilled in her the importance of resilience and determination, qualities that have guided Awere-Malik in building Didi Rose Jewelry. The brand's fine jewelry pieces are a balance between personal style and cultural legacy, all anchored in the memory of her grandmother. 'My grandmother was the foundation of my life,' Awere-Malik said. 'She taught me that failure is not an option when you have people relying on you for support.'

Bask & Lather Co.: A Haircare Brand Inspired by a Mother's Love
Shaina Rainford, a nurse practitioner and mom, built Bask & Lather Co. from remedies passed down by her own mother. Her mother created oils to restore confidence and nurture their family's hair, and years later, she recreated them for Rainford during COVID. This experience sparked the idea of sharing these care products with the world. 'My mother is the foundation of Bask & Lather,' Rainford shared. 'She initially created these oils within our family to restore confidence and nurture our hair.'

The Haitian Croissant: A Brand Rooted in Haitian Heritage
Ayida Solé's brand, The Haitian Croissant, is a celebration of her family's heritage. Her grandmother was the center of this memory, and Solé designed the With Love Collection to honor her. 'Headwrapping has always been a part of my childhood and womanhood,' Solé said. 'My grandmother, our queen, has always been at the center of that memory.'

Octavia Morgan: A Luxury Fragrance Brand Inspired by a Grandmother's Love
Octavia Morgan's eponymous luxury fragrance brand is an ode to her grandmother. She recalls her grandmother introducing her to the power of fragrance, often reminding Octavia that 'a woman is never fully dressed until she sprays her fragrance.' This legacy brand honors her grandmother and provides fragrances designed for sensitive skin.

Estelle Colored Glass: A Luxury Brand Inspired by a Grandmother's Love for Antique Glass
Stephanie Summerson Hall's Estelle Colored Glass is a luxury brand of hand-blown and specialty-made colored glass cake stands and stemware. Her grandmother, Estelle, loved antiquing and had a special day of the week where she visited her favorite shops looking for new treasures. Hall learned from her grandmother's love for antique glass and now creates heirloom-quality pieces that help create special memories.

SunKiss Organics: An Organic Skincare Line Inspired by Caribbean Women
Jessica Jade, a Black Latina from the Bronx, founded SunKiss Organics after developing chronic eczema. She turned to her roots and created formulas inspired by recipes passed down through generations of Caribbean women in her family. Her mission is to make self-care a natural part of everyone's day.

These six Black founders are not only building successful businesses but also honoring the women who paved the way for them. Their stories serve as a reminder that love, legacy, and inspiration can drive even the most ambitious endeavors. As we celebrate these entrepreneurs, let us also acknowledge the mothers and grandmothers who have shaped their journeys.
