RFK Jr. Grilled by Rep. Summer Lee Over Black Maternal Health Research

Rep. Summer Lee Presses RFK Jr. About Black Maternal Health ResearchIn a tense exchange, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. faced scrutiny from Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.) over the Trump administration's attacks on Black maternal health research and community-based programs.

Black Maternal Health Crisis
The statistics are stark: Black women are at least three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Rep. Lee highlighted the severity of this crisis, noting that Black women in her district are more likely to die during pregnancy than their peers in 97% of U.S. cities.

Elimination of Research Grants
Rep. Lee questioned Secretary Kennedy about the NIH's cancellation of grants researching Black maternal health, which she described as 'one of the most egregious examples' of the administration's disregard for racial disparities in healthcare.

Healthy Start Program Under Threat
The Healthy Start program, a community-based maternal health initiative, is also under threat. Rep. Lee expressed concern that the Trump administration's 2027 budget proposes to eliminate funding for this vital program, which has been instrumental in reducing maternal mortality rates among Black women.

DEI Initiatives Under Fire
Secretary Kennedy's commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) initiatives has come under scrutiny. Rep. Lee grilled him about the administration's plans to prioritize DEI efforts, which she argued are essential for addressing systemic inequalities in healthcare.

The exchange between Rep. Summer Lee and Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. highlights the urgent need for policymakers to address the Black maternal health crisis. By prioritizing research grants, community-based programs, and DEI initiatives, we can work towards a more equitable healthcare system that serves all Americans.
