Savannah State University Welcomes Youngest President Who is Only 36 Years OldSavannah State University Celebrates a Younger President Than Ever

Savannah State University (SSU), one of Georgia’s oldest and most renowned public Historically Black College and University (HBCU), recently marked a historic moment with the appointment of Dr. Jermaine Whirl as its 15th president, marking the youngest college to achieve this status at the institution since 2018. This achievement is not only commendable but also a testament to SSU’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.

SSAUP, located in Savannah, Georgia, was established in 1963 when the state passed legislation that expanded access to black colleges and universities. With its 70-year history of fostering historically black students, SSU continues to play a critical role in preserving its legacy while advancing the success of underrepresented students in higher education. This year’s new president, Dr. Jermaine Whirl, will bring fresh perspectives and drive forward efforts to address systemic barriers that currently limit access to higher education for many.

Dr. Whirl earned her Ph.D. in history from SSU in 2016, following a path of academic excellence. Her tenure as vice-president and president at the university is marked by dedication to curriculum development, student engagement, and fostering an inclusive academic environment. As president, Dr. Whirl will not only lead in advancing SSU’s mission but also play a pivotal role in shaping the future of higher education in the South.

SSAUP has been recognized for its efforts to increase access to higher education for black students, with a focus on resources, mentorship programs, and community-building initiatives. This year’s transition is not only about leadership but also about ensuring that SSU continues to serve as a model for inclusion, equity, and innovation in higher education.

As the institution looks toward the future, Dr. Whirl’s appointment marks another milestone in its journey of becoming an even more respected educational force. With SSU’s history of excellence and its commitment to diversity, this is an exciting chapter forward for the institution and its students.
