Gabrielle Union Opens Up About Menopause, Hot Flashes, and Finding Humor in the Midst of Embarrassment

Gabrielle Union recalls the time she broke out into hot flashes while filming a steamy love scene in upcoming romcomActress Gabrielle Union is breaking down barriers by speaking candidly about her experiences with menopause, hot flashes, and finding humor in the midst of embarrassment. In a recent interview, she shared her personal story of navigating perimenopause, which began in her late 30s, and how it has impacted her life.

A Journey Through Perimenopause
Union's journey through perimenopause started earlier than expected, with symptoms like night sweats and hot flashes becoming a regular occurrence. She recalled feeling embarrassed and ashamed, not knowing who to talk to or where to find support. 'I just didn't have the information,' she said. 'My mom wasn't chatty Cathy about that sort of thing.' This sense of isolation is a common experience for many women going through menopause, but Union's willingness to speak out is helping to break down stigmas and encourage others to share their stories.

The Embarrassment of Hot Flashes
One of the most visible symptoms of menopause is hot flashes, which can be both embarrassing and debilitating. Union shared a particularly memorable incident on set while filming a romantic comedy, where she broke out into a hot flash during a steamy love scene. 'It read like I'm not very confident,' she joked. However, she also acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, stating that women should not have to suffer in silence due to lack of understanding or support.

Finding Humor and Support
Despite the challenges she faced, Union has found humor and support in her journey through menopause. She credits her doctors for helping her understand what she was experiencing and providing options for managing symptoms. 'So many women have moderate to severe hot flashes, and it's just not fair that women have to suffer in silence because it's going to happen to everyone,' said Dr. Diana Bitner, Chief Medical Officer of Women's Health. Union has also started using LYNKUET, an FDA-approved non-hormonal therapy for treating hot flashes.

Gabrielle Union's candid conversation about menopause and hot flashes is a powerful reminder that women should not have to suffer in silence. By sharing her personal story and advocating for greater understanding and support, she is helping to break down stigmas and encourage others to speak out. As Union so eloquently put it, 'It's embarrassing. I'm working with a younger guy, and [it's] like, 'Oh great, here comes old Mother Hubbard... with her hot flashes.' But with humor, support, and the right resources, women can navigate this challenging time with confidence and dignity.
