A Network of Support
Enter Nneka Obiekwe, a 37-year-old consultant who has been a go-to resource for job seekers in her network. With a reputation for being able to connect people with the right opportunities, Obiekwe's own career was recently put to the test when she faced a wall of requests from friends and acquaintances seeking her help. Realizing that her network wasn't limitless, Obiekwe took matters into her own hands and created a WhatsApp group chat called Black Women Rising.
A Community Takes Shape
Within 24 hours, over 500 women had joined the group, many of whom were mid-career or senior professionals who had been laid off in recent months. The messages began to flow, with updates from women trying to stay hopeful and frustration from those struggling to cope with the uncertainty. Obiekwe soon moved the group to Discord, creating channels for sharing good news and venting frustrations.
A Message of Hope
The story of Black Women Rising serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, community and solidarity can be a potent force. By coming together and supporting one another, these women are finding strength in numbers and refusing to let career uncertainty define them.
As the job market continues to evolve, it's clear that Black women will not be silenced or defeated. Through their unwavering commitment to each other, they are building a community that is resilient, resourceful, and determined to thrive in the face of uncertainty.
