TikTok's New Privacy Policy Sparks Concerns Among Users

TikTok is now in U.S. hands. HereIn a move that has left many users concerned, TikTok has updated its privacy policy to include new provisions for collecting precise location information and sensitive personal data. The changes have sparked a backlash on social media, with some users deleting the app over fears of surveillance.

TikTok's New Ownership Structure
After splitting from its Chinese parent company ByteDance earlier this year, TikTok has introduced new terms of service and privacy policies. The company is now owned by a U.S.-based entity, with software maker Oracle, private equity firm Silver Lake, and Abu Dhabi-based investment firm MGX owning a combined 45% stake. ByteDance will retain 19.9% of the business.

Precise Location Data Collection
The new policy allows TikTok to collect precise location data from users' devices if they enable location services in their device settings. This change has raised concerns among experts, who warn that precise location data can be used to pinpoint a user's exact address or even the floor of an apartment building.

Sensitive Personal Data Collection
TikTok's new policy also includes provisions for collecting sensitive personal data, including racial or ethnic origin, national origin, religious beliefs, mental health diagnosis, physical health diagnosis, sexual life, and citizenship status. The company claims that it will process this data in accordance with applicable law.

User Concerns and Backlash
The changes have sparked a backlash on social media, with some users expressing concerns about the scope of TikTok's data collection. Experts warn that users should be cautious when enabling location services and consider disabling precise location tracking to protect their privacy.

TikTok's new privacy policy has raised concerns among users, who are worried about the company's ability to collect sensitive personal data and precise location information. As the app continues to evolve under its new ownership structure, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact user trust and engagement.
