Alabama Sets Execution Date for Man Who Didn't Pull Trigger
Burton's Conviction and Sentence
Burton was sentenced to death for his role in the August 16, 1991, robbery of an auto parts store in Talladega. However, prosecutors depicted him as the ringleader of the robbery, despite evidence suggesting he didn't shoot anyone. Derrick DeBruce, the man who actually fired the gun, received a reduced sentence and died in prison.
Calls for Clemency
A cross-section of people, including one of the victim's children and some jurors, had urged Governor Ivey to consider clemency for Burton. They argued it would be unfair to execute him when DeBruce received a lesser sentence.
Governor's Decision
Despite these calls for mercy, Governor Ivey has set an execution date for March 12 using nitrogen gas. Burton's attorney, Matt Schulz, expressed disappointment and hope that the governor might still change her mind.
The case of Charles 'Sonny' Burton raises important questions about the fairness and justice of the death penalty. As the execution date approaches, it remains to be seen whether Governor Ivey will reconsider her decision or if Burton's fate is sealed.
