Irish Man Detained by ICE for Months, Fears for His Life

Irish man Seamus Culleton held for months by ICE says he had U.S. work permit, and now fears for his lifeSeamus Culleton, a 20-year resident of the United States and husband of an American citizen, has been held in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center for nearly five months. Despite having a valid work permit and pending green card application, Culleton's life is now a 'nightmare' as he faces uncertain conditions in the El Paso Camp East Montana facility.

A Life of Uncertainty
Culleton, who lived in Boston, was detained by ICE and is currently being held at the El Paso Camp East Montana, an ICE detention facility inside the Fort Bliss Army base in Texas. The agency's detainee locator system confirms his presence at the facility. In a phone interview with Irish state broadcaster RTÉ, Culleton described life at the camp as unpredictable and chaotic, stating that 'you don't know what's going to happen on a day-to-day basis.' He characterized the detention facilities as 'a bunch of temporary tents,' highlighting the harsh conditions he faces.

Consular Assistance Provided
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been aware of Culleton's case and is providing consular assistance to him and his family. The department's spokesperson stated that their Embassy in Washington D.C. is engaging directly with the Department of Homeland Security at a senior level regarding this matter.

Human Rights Concerns
The detention center where Culleton is being held has been accused of human rights abuses, including beatings and sexual abuse by officers against detained immigrants. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other human rights groups have released a letter demanding the closure of ERO El Paso Camp East Montana due to these alleged rights violations.

Seamus Culleton's case highlights the complexities and challenges faced by individuals in immigration detention centers. As he fears for his life, it is essential that authorities address the human rights concerns surrounding these facilities and provide adequate support to those affected.
