Measles Outbreaks Surge Across US, Threatening Elimination Status

Measles cases at university in Florida soar to nearly 60 amid growing outbreaks nationwideThe United States is facing a growing measles crisis, with cases skyrocketing to nearly 60 at one university in Florida and over 1,000 confirmed nationwide. As the country teeters on the brink of losing its measles-elimination status for the first time in over two decades, experts are sounding the alarm about the dangers of unvaccinated communities.

Measles Cases Soar at University in Florida
At Ave Maria University near Naples, Florida, measles cases have reached nearly 60. A sophomore student who is unvaccinated told CBS News that he initially thought his symptoms were just a head cold, but soon developed a rash and sore throat. The university has stated its commitment to the health and safety of its students, but experts warn that unvaccinated individuals are putting themselves and others at risk.

Nationwide Outbreaks Continue to Spread
The US is now at risk of losing its measles-elimination status for the first time in over two decades. With more than 1,000 confirmed cases nationwide, CBS News has tracked a significant increase in outbreaks across the country. South Carolina continues to have the largest outbreak, with over 900 cases since September.

CDC Warns of Porous Borders and Unvaccinated Communities
Principal Deputy Director at the CDC, Ralph Abraham, attributed the surge in measles cases to porous borders and unvaccinated communities. He emphasized that it's a matter of personal freedom for individuals to choose not to vaccinate, but warned that this choice has consequences for public health.

Symptoms and Complications of Measles
According to the CDC, measles symptoms appear 7-14 days after contact with the virus. These can include high fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and rash. In some cases, serious complications such as pneumonia or encephalitis can develop.

Experts Urge Vaccination to Prevent Outbreaks
FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing measles outbreaks. He noted that the administration considers core essential vaccines, including the MMR vaccine, which is recommended for children between 12-15 months.

As the US struggles to contain the growing measles outbreak, experts are urging individuals and communities to take action to prevent further spread of the disease. With over 1,000 confirmed cases nationwide and a risk of losing its measles-elimination status, it's clear that vaccination is key to protecting public health.
