New Museum Celebrating Black Women Innovators Receives $1 Million Boost from Virginia
In a significant move towards recognizing and honoring the often-overlooked contributions of Black women, the state of Virginia has invested $1 million in the Museum of Black Women Innovators. This new museum, set to open its doors in Portsmouth, Virginia, will celebrate 250 trailblazing women who have left an indelible mark on history.A Museum Born Out of Necessity
The idea for the museum was sparked by founder Angela Reddix's observation that people often struggle to name Black women whose inventions and innovations have reshaped everyday life. To address this knowledge gap, the museum will feature 250 Black women across 14 categories, including science, technology, politics, and activism.
A Legacy of Innovation
The museum's mission is to bring to light the stories of women like Mary Beatrice Davison Kenner, who patented an adjustable sanitary belt in the 1950s; Marian Croak, whose over 200 patents include foundational work on Voice over Internet Protocol technology; and Sarah Goode, who patented a folding cabinet bed in 1885. These women, among many others, have made significant contributions to their respective fields but remain largely unknown to the general public.
A Symbol of Progress
The museum's location is also symbolic of progress. It will occupy the first floor of The Mustard Seed Place, a building that once operated as The Famous Department Store during segregation. One of the store's first Black employees was an elevator operator named Anna, whose story has been uncovered through community connections and family ties.
A Bright Future Ahead
The $1 million investment from Virginia lawmakers will not only help build the museum but also support its mission to provide free access to students. The museum is expected to draw tourism and strengthen Virginia's creative economy, making it a valuable addition to the state's cultural landscape.
