Did Jordan Love regress in 2024? The Packers arenDid Jordan Love Regress in 2024? The Packers' Perspective on Regression

The 2024 NFL season brought a wave of excitement and uncertainty as teams continued to evaluate their talent and strategies. For the Green Bay Packers, one of the most intriguing questions revolved around their starting running back, Jordan Love. Many analysts and fans wondered whether Love had "regressed" in his second NFL season after delivering a solid but not spectacular 2023 campaign.

The term "regression" in football typically refers to a player's performance declining compared to previous seasons. However, the Packers' head coach, Matt LaFemina, has maintained that Love did not regress in 2024. In fact, the Packers appear to believe that Love improved rather than getting worse.

This perspective is rooted in how Love's role and workload shifted during the season. Last year, Love was primarily a backup behind injury-prone running backs like injury-plagued Latavius Murray and Greg Zuerlein. When both were injured, Love stepped into a starting role and put up decent numbers—1,268 yards on 24 carries with five touchdowns and an 8.5 average yards per carry.

In 2024, however, the Packers rotation of running backs became even more dynamic as Murray was dealt with ongoing injuries, Zuerlein continued to recover from a season-ending injury, and Love was moved into a more prominent role outside of the backfield. Love's workload increased significantly, allowing him more opportunities to prove himself in a starting capacity.

While some fans were concerned that Love might regress due to his role as a primary starter now, LaFemina appears focused on building consistency for Love in 2025. The Packers' decision-makers believe that Love will continue to improve with each year and that the increased reps this season have helped him build strength and refine his technique.

It's also worth noting that Love was not expected to be a top-tier running back in the NFL, even before the injuries of last season. At 24 years old, he is in the prime of his career but still has room for growth. The Packers' perspective on his performance this season is likely more about rebuilding their offensive line and developing young players like Jayden Reed behind him.

In conclusion, while Love's 2024 numbers may not have been exactly as high as his 2023 ones, the Packers believe he did not regress in the traditional sense. Instead, the shift in his role and increased workload provided an opportunity for him to improve further, something that can be built upon moving forward.
