Saving a Legacy: Urban Intellectuals' Fight for Independent Black History Education
In a desperate bid to stay afloat, Freddie Taylor, founder of Urban Intellectuals, is sounding the alarm about his company's precarious financial situation. With over 700,000 Black history flashcards sold and a decade of dedication to making African American history accessible, the stakes are high for this pioneering education company.A Decade of Dedication
Founded in 2016 by Freddie Taylor, Urban Intellectuals has been a beacon of hope for families, children, and communities seeking to learn about Black history. With a mission to make African American history easy, accessible, and empowering, the company has delivered its products to all 50 states and 64 countries worldwide. Over 250,000 customers have benefited from their educational resources, including flashcards, books, live classes, playing cards, cultural resources, and community education programs.
The Financial Struggle
However, the company is now facing a daunting challenge: rising costs of materials, shipping, advertising, fulfillment, warehousing, logistics, tariffs, and increased competition from scammers and knockoff products. These expenses have created a 'chokehold' around Urban Intellectuals' operations, threatening to shut down the business unless immediate action is taken.
The Save Urban Intellectuals Campaign
In response to this crisis, Taylor has launched the Save Urban Intellectuals campaign, an urgent community-powered effort to prevent the company's closure. The goal is to raise $100,000 from 1,000 Defenders who will contribute $100 each in exchange for 100 days of access to either Sankofa Circle or Sankofa Club, the company's adult and children's Black history education programs.
A Call to Action
Taylor emphasizes that this is not just about saving a business but about protecting independent Black history education at a time when it is under attack. He stresses that Black history is world history, and it is the missing pages of world history that our people need access to in their homes, schools, churches, and communities.
As Urban Intellectuals fights for its survival, the community must rally behind this vital education company. By supporting the Save Urban Intellectuals campaign, we can ensure that independent Black history education continues to thrive, empowering future generations with a deeper understanding of their heritage and place in the world.
