Artemis II Crew Opens Up About Toilet Troubles During Historic Mission

Artemis II astronauts talk mission toilet troubles: "We made do"When it comes to space travel, there's no shortage of challenges. But for the Artemis II crew, one unexpected issue stood out: toilet troubles. In a recent town hall meeting on CBS Mornings, astronauts shared their experiences with plumbing problems that plagued them during their historic mission around the moon.

The Plumbing Issues
The Artemis II crew faced intermittent toilet trouble from the first day of their mission. Initially, issues with the system's fan were resolved, but a frozen vent line made it impossible for the tank to empty. NASA flight controllers re-oriented the Orion capsule to allow sunlight to warm the vent, reducing the clog.

Backup Methods
To keep everything hygienic, the crew used backup methods while engineers worked on solving the problems. Mission specialist Christina Koch explained that 'everything on the spaceship usually has a backup system,' and they utilized their contingency collapsible urinals (CCUs). Each crew member had two CCUs for use when the toilet was unavailable.

Astronauts Share Their Experiences
During the town hall meeting, pilot Victor Glover joked about the challenges they faced, referencing frozen urine droplets that remain in space after being vented. Astronaut Christina Koch shared her perspective on using CCUs: 'We got through it. It wasn't as easy as our fancy, good toilet, but we made do.'

Hygiene in Space
The crew also addressed questions about hygiene during their mission. Astronaut Koch mentioned that showers in space are great, allowing for a floating water experience. The astronauts used CCUs to collect and vent waste water overboard independently of the toilet.

The Artemis II crew's experiences with toilet troubles serve as a reminder that even in the most advanced spaceships, unexpected issues can arise. However, with backup systems and determination, these astronauts were able to overcome their challenges and complete their historic mission around the moon.
