Sudan's Military Weighs New Truce Proposal Amid Ongoing Conflict

Sudanese military reportedly weighing up new truce proposal | AfricanewsIn a glimmer of hope for the war-torn nation, Sudan's military is reportedly considering a new humanitarian truce proposal received from mediators in the United States and Saudi Arabia. The proposal comes as the conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) enters its third year, leaving over 150,000 dead and displacing at least 11 million people.

A Long Road to Peace
Efforts to reach a ceasefire have intensified in the past year under US President Donald Trump's administration. The so-called Quad – grouping the US, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia – has led discussions aimed at producing a sustained ceasefire. However, talks have been deadlocked for months after Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan accused the group of bias in favour of the UAE.

A New Proposal on the Table
The new proposal is said to be a result of intensified efforts by mediators, who have been working tirelessly to bring an end to the conflict. The army has been at war with the RSF for close to three years, and the humanitarian crisis has reached catastrophic levels. The United Nations has described the situation as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with civilians facing displacement, hunger, disease, and widespread human rights abuses by both sides.

A Crucial Meeting Ahead
The Security and Defence Council – which groups military and allied government officials – is set to meet on Wednesday to review the plan. A source close to the matter has confirmed that the council will discuss the proposal in detail, with a view to making a decision on whether to accept it or not.

As Sudan's military weighs the new truce proposal, hopes are high that an end to the conflict may finally be in sight. The humanitarian crisis has been devastating, and any move towards peace would be a welcome relief for the people of Sudan. However, the road ahead will be long and challenging, requiring commitment from all parties involved.
