Judge Halts Kanu Judgement, Orders Ejection for 'Unruly Behaviour'
Abuja, Nigeria – A Federal High Court in Abuja was thrown into chaos today after the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, ordered operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) to forcibly remove the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, from the courtroom.
The dramatic development led to the immediate halt of a scheduled judgement delivery in Mr. Kanu's terrorism trial.
Disruption and Standoff
The incident occurred as Justice Omotosho was set to commence proceedings and deliver the highly anticipated judgement on the matter. According to reports from the courtroom, Mr. Kanu, who was brought from SSS custody, suddenly stood up and vehemently interjected, stating that the judgement could not proceed.
"My Lord, there is no judgement today because we have joined issues in the matter," Mr. Kanu was quoted as saying.
Justice Omotosho cautioned the IPOB leader, reminding him of the court's decorum. However, as Mr. Kanu persisted in his objection, the judge declared his conduct "unruly" and directed SSS operatives to remove him from the courtroom.
Judgement Postponed
Following the order, security operatives attempted to comply, but Mr. Kanu initially refused to move, leading to a brief standoff. The court was then stood down, and the matter was ultimately postponed until a later date.
The judgement was originally fixed for today after the court had previously foreclosed Mr. Kanu's defence in the trial, ruling that he had waived his right to counter the prosecution's case after weeks of refusing to enter a defence. Kanu has maintained that the terrorism charges against him are invalid as they were brought under a repealed law.
The trial is in connection with the Federal Government's secessionist campaign charges against the IPOB leader.
