When you'll believe anything

Beliefs about money are often shaped less by facts and more by stories that feel convincing. People build financial views from personal experiences, cultural background, and what they’ve seen work around them—even if those experiences are limited or unusual. A single success or failure can become “proof” that something always works or never does, turning opinions into strong convictions.

Persuasive narratives spread faster than careful evidence. Simple explanations, confident voices, and emotional stories make ideas feel true, even when reality is more complex. In uncertain areas like investing and the economy, where outcomes are unpredictable, people naturally cling to explanations that reduce confusion and give a sense of control.

Recognizing this tendency is a financial advantage. Questioning easy answers, separating feelings from facts, and accepting uncertainty lead to better decisions. Long-term success comes from humility—understanding that what feels obviously true may just be a convincing story, not reliable reality.
