Thomas Sankara was one of Africa’s most bold and honest leaders, often called “Africa’s Che Guevara.”
He was born in 1949 in what was then called Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso). As a young man, he joined the military, where he became known for his intelligence, discipline, and strong belief that Africa should be independent and self-reliant.

In 1983, at just 33 years old, Sankara became president after a revolution. One of his first actions was to rename the country Burkina Faso, meaning “Land of Honest People.”
