One major sign of intelligence is listening to those who are greater experts than us. As a young man, it is true that Albert Einstein smoked. A lot. The prevailing thought was that there was nothing wrong with it, and tobacco companies openly and prolifically promoted the practice.
As an older man, Albert Einstein saw a diminished lung capacity and was informed by his doctor that it was due to his heavy smoking — he was advised to stop. And he immediately did just did; he reportedly never lit another cigar or cigarette or fire up his pipe again. Still, many photos will see Einstein with a pipe in his mouth; he was fond of the habit, and even without putting tobacco in it, would continue to suck on it as was his long-time habit.
There is nothing stupid about having an unhealthy habit and holding on to it for a while, absent-mindedly and not giving it much thought as you’re busy on other things… what IS stupid is to hold on to this bad habit even after a doctor tells you it is negatively affecting your health. Einstein was by no means stupid — he immediately stopped when his doctor asked him to, because he knew his doctor to be more knowledgeable than himself on the subject and he trusted his judgement.
