A Dying Soldier Finds Life
Life is full of the unexpected. The world is a battle field for both the weak and the strong. We are all tackling and struggling to rescue one thing or the other in the name of survive physically and spiritually. It is usually the survival of the fittest!
Only those who are able to fight and win in good faith alive would have good reports to give the world. Also, no life experience is battle free but you should strive as much as possible to live your world without wounds or pains.
Those who claimed to be good fighters do fight tactically employing the right and correct strategies all the time. No big deal in getting wounded in battles!
The reason being that wounds and pains from battles could be severe and terrible or unimagined. In fact, the wounds from battles can make you deformed, disabled or disengaged. And if too serious, you may lose your life as a giant warrior. The joy of victory remained best when the war is won without any causality.
Likewise in the journey of life, a competent driver is the one who drives without accident or breaking the rules of traffic.
The fear of getting killed or wounded remained one of the uttermost reasons why parents in those days refused bluntly to voluntarily release their kids to be enlisted in the army during the civil of 1967 in Nigeria.
To be a soldier in uniform is a thing of pride. But you are not a real fighter yet until you have being to the war front! Really the experience differs.
It is one thing to be in the battle field facing the enemy in raw fight with sophisticated weapons and ammunitions. It is another ball game entirely to dodge being killed or wounded at the war front.
‘’Only those who lived after the war that can tell the battle stories or relate their experiences at the battle field!’’
There is joy in being alive after the war. The death don’t tell stories of a journey! Only the living does! The champions are finishers. Thy never permit anything to get them stranded or frustrated.
Meanwhile, long time ago. There was a gallant soldier who fought helplessly during World War1. His name was Bert Smith.
Right from his early life, Bert Smith loved seeing himself as military officer in army uniform. He got interested in becoming a professionally trained soldier from war films, movies and videos watched!
The happiest day in the life of Berth Smith was the day he successfully passed the military training at the Defence Academy and got enlisted in the army to defend his beloved country.
At the passing out parade, Berth Smith got the award of the most brilliant performing Cadet-in-training. This feat was a big pride to his parents. He never regretted standing up as a young ready for a life-time service to humanity!
‘’Once a soldier is a soldier!’’ ‘’An Old Soldier Never Die’’ Says a Yoruba popular adage.
Going to the warfront may be frank and pensive, but the return is usually alarming with bounties and loots!
In the past, several brilliant and virile soldiers have got lives terminated by the authorities at stake.
One thing peculiar with Berth Smith was his readiness to face up challenges where others are running away from.
As a result, Berth Smith was among the first batch of army that fought at the warfront during the World War 1.
However, while the battle was being stage at France, a long trench was dug. This famous and special place of safety was tagged and called: ‘’Traverse Trench ‘’ it took several effort of the warriors to get the trench in shape.
One terrible day, while inside the dangerous trench watching and planning to strike at the enemies. Berth Smith experienced an unexpected disaster unplanned and out rightly disappointing. In life, most especially in the war front, any eventuality can occurred when least expected.
Everything is made to be that way. The person that you talked and dine with in the morning could be announced dead by evening time. That is the more reason while you should not defer or postpone what is crucial to be done. Today and the moment is the only time you have, tomorrow may be too late.
What an unfortunate incident, Berth Smith got terribly wounded when a shell exploded nearby.
Ruggedly, on seeing what happened? His close friend and associate ‘’Tiny’’ Jim and another soldier nearby inside the trench at that period who escaped the bomb-blast came to Berth’s rescue fast.
They promptly offered him the necessary first aid treated so as to save his life. Indeed, they made Berth as comfortable as possible because he was too dear to them as a bosom friend and platoon leader. They were not ready to have him missed in their midst.
However, despite all the timely treatments offered him by the Good Samaritans. Berth was victim of the severe accident. The explosive had done greater damage to the left side of his being. The wounds were fatal and glaring at a glance.
After, Jim had returned to the line awaiting the ambulance to pick his bosom friend to the clinic for further treatment.
He saw suddenly startled by Berth’s voice behind him.
‘’Can You tell me the way to heaven?’’
He asked with all seriousness! The voiced-out was with intend urgency and clamour for prompt right answer.
It was strange to hear such a rare inquiry from Berth Smith.
At first, Tiny thought his friend was in Trans and out of sense for making such a request at that moment. But later he saw the seriousness in Berth at getting the right answer to the untimely question.
Really, there are no goodness inside the pains of life. The wounded soldier was completely down wailing and walloping in pains.
Like an angel from the stable, Jim activated himself and promptly jumped down beside the dying man and said in bitterness:
‘’I am sorry; I don’t know the way to heaven, but I’ll ask the other fellows!’’
Unlike tired minds that rarely made good decisions. Tiny took it as keen assignment. He launched out to reach other combatants in deeper search for solution to Berth Smith’s enquiry.
Immediately, he walked along the firing steps not minding the risks or dangers attached to such a movement. You can never possess what you are not willing to pursue.
The total truth was; Tiny Jim loved his friend dearly and wanted to please him at all cost. Else, he would not have embarked on such highly risky mission in the battle front. Nothing is too much to offer a sincere friend out of love!
Jim then inquired of the first few men he came across. But what a great pity? No one knew the way to heaven. Therefore could not offer any correct answer to the inquiry!
Without stopping or getting discouraged, Jim went down the line making the appeal from man to man, disillusioned people, until number 16 was reached after few hours.
Doubt is Deadly! What you failed to master in life will eventually master you freely.
It was greatly surprising and unexpected that the right answer to Berth Smith’s enquiry could take that long. Not one of the sixteen able men could tell the way to heaven.
And without know the way to a place, it will be extremely difficult to get there. Many sojourners have got lost inside the wilderness of life without radius or pilot to navigate the road map correctly.
To be candid, no sane fellow would embark on a journey of destiny without identifying first the final destination from the start. Those travellers who have mastered the road don’t perambulated or embarked on any Israelite journey again!
Meanwhile, the singular statement that occupied the atmosphere where Berth Smith wailed in pains was:
‘’Please, show me the way to heaven!’’
Silence could not be misquoted. Can you imagine, sixteen decent young fellow bought up in a ‘’Christian’’ land but they could not help their dying colleague swimming inside the pains of life. What a complete blunt pursue of shadow in the world filled with prejudice, fear and great disappointments? Only rightful living is the key to external blessings.
In peace time they would have told him so as to sort the way, but when a pal is dying on the battle field but somehow it’s different ball game entirely.
At the crucial time, guessing or not being double sure of the right answer may be disastrous and unpalatable. It was a serious matter at the moment. A crooked answer will never work but the truth only.
Therefore, the truth is better told. When a fellow is at the point of death, he wants the real thing and not fake!
At the moment, turning over a new leaf, christening, confirmation, baptism, paying tithes and offerings, taking the sacrament and doing good works would not do any good for the poor Berth Smith dying inside Traverse Trench on danger list.
What he needed most was a saviour and the right companion to meet him at that crucial period. It was tough struggles and serious experience for the two of them.
Amazingly, Tiny was in search of solution while Berth Smith was about to give up ghost without knowing the right way to heaven.
Could you have told Berth the way to heaven?
Could you have opened the Holy Bible and pointed out God’s way?
It is there in plain language.
Horrible and terrible, back right inside the trench, the news was passed to number 17 for an answer or the way forward:
‘’ Berth is dying and wants to know the way to heaven. Can you tell him?’’
Like an expected inquiry, a smile lit his handsome face as he replied,
‘’ Yes, I know the way to heaven, but I dare not leave my station for now!’’
Trusting his hands into his back pocket. He gently pulled out a New Testament and opened it to John 3:16.
‘’Tell him this is the way to heaven!’’
Without any further delay or waste of time, Jim quickly passed both the message and the Testament. They were dropped to Berth who lay critically there so still.
Jim gently touched his shoulders slowly, Berth opened his eyes.
‘’ I’ve got it, Berth, old chum,’’ said Jim.
‘’Here is the Way to Heaven:
‘’For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life’’ [John3:16]
Surprisingly, the poor Berth’s eyes were wide-open now. He was drinking in every word. What a scene it was! The lost hope appeared resorted.
Jim was very amazed to witness what was happening.
‘’Tiny’’ Jim kneeling in the trench with the little Testament in his big hand and tears rolling off his eyes like a baby reading again and again those life given words of faith to his dying friend.
Thereafter, a look of peace came over Berth’s face as he kept gasping out ‘’whoever!’’
And after lying quietly for a while, his face lift up with satisfaction and with one last feeble effort he whispered ‘’whoever’’ and was gone finally from the battlefield. He gave up the ghost and left the forest of life in peace.
Berth Smith left the world of battles to be with Christ!
At last the journey ended in victory for Captain Berth Smith who had found the way to heaven unlike others. He had a glorious exit from this world of sin and troubles. Gone triumph to dwell at the bosom of the Saviour Jesus Christ!
As if a great storm vamoose and peace be still. What an amazing experience ever! #news #ForYourInformation #arts
