Episode 3 – The Assignment That Wasn’t in the Textbook
That night, I barely slept. I kept replaying the way his thumb brushed my wrist, the way his eyes lingered like he was reading a book written only for him. I should have been memorizing formulas, but instead, I was memorizing the shape of his lips when he said my name.
The next day in school, everything felt different. The classroom that used to bore me suddenly felt alive because he was there. His voice was the only sound I wanted to hear, and whenever he wrote on the board, I found myself staring too long at his hands.
During break, my friend Chioma teased me.
“Why are you glowing like this? Who is making you smile?”
I laughed it off, but inside, I knew the answer. It was Mr. Kene.
When class ended, my heart raced again as students filed out. This time, he didn’t even call my name. He just looked at me, and somehow, I knew. I stayed back.
The corridor grew silent. He closed the book in front of me and leaned closer.
“You’re distracted,” he said softly.
I tried to deny it, but my cheeks betrayed me, burning hot.
Then he slipped a folded paper across the desk. My hands shook as I opened it. It wasn’t notes, it wasn’t formulas. Just five words, written in neat red ink:
“Meet me after class. Alone.”
I looked up. His eyes locked with mine, holding me still.
“Bring your notebook,” he added, his tone low, careful. “I want to give you a special assignment… one that’s not in the textbook.”
My stomach flipped. My body wanted to scream yes, but my mind was warning me. What did he mean? What kind of assignment wasn’t in the textbook?
When I walked out of the lesson center, the paper still clutched in my hand, I knew my life had just taken a turn. A dangerous one.
