AVALANCHE (COLD DEATH)
INTRODUCTION
The mountain detonated, without any warning, like a concealed bomb. I looked up and panic struck as I stared at the peak to see an enormous white wave falling over the cliffs, building momentum so fast. An unimaginable fear consumed us.
Till this day, the trauma definitely still affects me.
CHAPTER 1: ADVENTURE
I love adventures, I love the outdoors, exercising keeping feet, and all, but I yearned for something extra I wasn't a daredevil but my blood was pumped for some action.
One beautiful morning; April 14th 2000, skiing was what came to mind for that day, in the white Lands of Selch on Santa's Mountain, I, my best friend Paul Cent, and one dude Gabriel that directed us, and another people.
Cycling and roller skating was usually our thing, climbing and skiing wasn't, but our desire for this was enormous.
We never realized that the last conversations would be the most important in our lives as we started to climb.
There were so much rocks and snow in the part we took, if it seemed too dangerous we'll agree to turn back, we tried to copy Gabriel and went through rock bands and avoided steep slopes.
We didn’t retreat, we weren't scared, Instead I followed Paul and we moved.
We took a quick stop to eat after some hours, going just half the journey, from a distance the guide scouted the area while waiting.
Covered by snow, we were fascinated by the view of the most talked about mountain.
CHAPTER 2: AVALANCHE
Leading up to this climb, there had been tension between I and Paul, and we needed to settle things. we carried our things, and prepared to continue.
A thunderous roar sounded, and then quickly I screamed Paul and turned my head to see a rock hit him. The wave flung us from the ledge, to steep slopes.
In front above was an avalanche, I was still falling, seeing stars. I was falling from the mountain views we had just been enjoying, it was like a dream.
Hit after hit as I fell, the pain was excruciating, I broke my leg on the first hit, my knee joints pulled apart on the second, as the injuries compounded, I was certain I was not going to make it.
As my body reached the ground, finally I came to a stop, but a wave of snow and rooks continued downwards, covered in snow, I needed air, but couldn’t move.
I heard the avalanche thundering above, fear gripped me, in total darkness and suffocating, I was going to die.
CHAPTER 3:
I’m going to die now, I thought.
Alone.
Surprisingly the slope shook. Everything began moving, and I tumbled inside the snow again. Suddenly, I came to a stop near the surface of a cliff, my feet pointed downhill. I sat up and found myself in the middle of a wide cut out of avalanche remains.
Snow filled my mouth, I couldn't breathe I struggled and poured them out with my bloody hands
I had be separated from where settlements were to a quiet environment looking around, still fascinated by how high I fell from and fast.
I reached for my walkie talkie and switched it to receive, obviously no signal, I assumed every one else was dead and buried in the snow.
Using my hand, I swept snow from my legs, staring at my disfigured legs, blood poured on the snow. I knew I’d suffered severe injuries, but I felt strangely disconnected from any sensation. I would later find out I had broken bones, a dislocated knee, a concussion, a back injury, and multiple contusions and cuts.
CHAPTER 4:
From a distance I could see a figure among the avalanche remains. it was Gabriel I recognized his clothes. I couldn't stand my legs were terrible, it was really cold, I couldn't scream for him.
Above me, I saw something it was glimpses of Paul coming down, then I noticed he survived. It took a while for him to get down, he went to confirm what I knew: Gabriel had died, Paul was bleeding on the forehead, but was able to help me to a higher place close to the avalanche. He wrapped me up with his extra clothes, and left me some food and water and began to prepare to go find help. Paul was my only hope. I couldn’t stand, let alone walk. I didn’t want him to go, I was almost sure I wouldn’t see him again, he knelt down with his face close to mine, he looked me in the eye.
“I’m coming back to for you, just hold on, OK?”
CHAPTER 5:
I watched him walk away, then looked up to see Gabriel's body. Then I was alone once again, worst hours of my life, a memory I would never forget.
It was windy and getting colder, hours went by as fear dived in, It was quite and I was shivering.
Towards evening I heard helicopter blades, getting closer and closer, then fading away. I thought it was just in my head, and later I passed out.
Later, I gained consciousness and realized that I was being pulled. They moving me up towards the helicopter, as I was carried into the helicopter I heard Paul's voice.
Next was me being surrounded by doctors and nurses, some cutting off my clothes. Every one of them was attending to some part of me. But it felt like the different parts of me were scattered everywhere, I remembered Gabriel.
A nurse’s face appeared directly above mine, and said “You are safe now,”
