Omar Shaheed III chose a new engineering major that significantly impacted Higher Education institutions.

Omar Shaheed III Bet on a Brand New Engineering Major and Made HBCU HistoryOmar Shaheed III’s journey into mechatronics engineering at South Carolina State University stands as a testament to the power of passion and dedication in shaping one’s future. As a Berkeley High School graduate, Shaheed was initially drawn to the field of engineering but quickly realized that his technical background would be invaluable in a discipline that combines mechanical, electrical, computer science, and control systems. This interdisciplinary approach allowed him to tackle complex problems with creativity and precision.

At South Carolina State University, Shaheed’s mechatronics engineering degree not only expanded his career possibilities but also set the stage for his role as the first graduate of the program. Dr. Hasanul Basher, chairman of the Department of Engineering Technology, encouraged Shaheed to pursue his education at a historically Black university, a decision that would pave the way for his future contributions to the field.

Shaheed’s academic journey was further enriched by his internshipships with Boeing, where he applied his technical skills in manufacturing and product engineering roles. These experiences allowed him to gain hands-on experience in designing and building smart systems, from robotics to assistive technology. His ability to adapt to diverse responsibilities and work across different areas of production prepared him for the challenges of a dynamic engineering field.

As Shaheed completed his degree on December 11, he was already making significant strides toward his career. With the support of South Carolina State’s College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Transportation, he quickly found his footing in the university’s mechatronics program. His internshipships with Boeing were not just academic exercises but practical opportunities to apply his technical knowledge in real-world scenarios.

Shaheed’s success as a Black engineering graduate was a powerful reminder that innovation and creativity can transcend racial barriers. His story serves as an inspiration for others, showing that with the right mindset and dedication, one can make meaningful contributions to any field of endeavor.
