Family Files Lawsuit Against City of Aurora Over Fatal Police Shooting

Rajon Belt-Stubblefield Family Plans Lawsuit Against City Of Aurora, CO For 2025 Police Involved ShootingA devastating incident has left a family reeling, and now they're seeking justice. In August 2025, Rajon Belt-Stubblefield, a 37-year-old father, was fatally shot by an Aurora, Colorado police officer named Matthew Neely. The shooting occurred just 50 seconds into the encounter, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions and a community in shock.

The Fateful Encounter
According to reports, Belt-Stubblefield was stopped by Officer Neely for a potential DUI. However, he fled in his vehicle before crashing into several parked vehicles at a busy intersection. Despite being ordered to the ground at gunpoint, Belt-Stubblefield allegedly walked away from the officer before being approached for arrest. During this physical altercation, it's reported that he tossed a firearm into the grass and told his 18-year-old son, Zion Murphy, to 'get that s--t.' The officer responded by saying, 'Get away from that f---ing gun.' Belt-Stubblefield then began approaching the officer, who warned him, 'Get on the ground. I'll shoot you.' Tragically, this is exactly what happened – multiple shots were fired, with two hitting his body and one striking his head.

The Family's Response
Belt-Stubblefield's family has since notified the city of Aurora that they will be filing a lawsuit. In a statement, Erica Murphy, Zion Murphy's mother, expressed her outrage and sadness over the incident. 'No child should ever have to witness that,' she said. 'No child should have to carry the trauma for the rest of their life. Rajon was more than a headline. He was more than a police report. He was a father. He was loved. He mattered.'

The City's History with Police-Involved Shootings
This incident is not an isolated one in Aurora, Colorado. The city has a history of paying out large settlements to Black families over police killings. In 2019, they paid $15 million to the family of Elijah McClain, who was killed by police. They also paid $2.6 million to the family of Naeschylus Carter-Vinzant, another unarmed Black man gunned down by police.

The Belt-Stubblefield family's decision to file a lawsuit against the City of Aurora is a testament to their determination for justice and accountability. As this case unfolds, it will be crucial to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether Officer Neely's actions were justified. One thing is clear – the community demands answers, and the pursuit of truth must continue until justice is served.
