Lone Star College System Achieves National Recognition with Level II Arboretum Accreditation

Lone Star College System achieves national recognition with Level II arboretum accreditationIn a groundbreaking achievement, the Lone Star College System has been awarded Level II accreditation by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and The Morton Arboretum. This prestigious recognition acknowledges the system's dedication to developing a multi-campus arboretum that promotes education, sustainability, and community engagement across the region.

A Living, Interdisciplinary Resource
The LSCS Arboretum spans the Greater Houston metropolitan area, with trees across seven campuses mapped, digitally identified, and incorporated into a shared species database. This innovative approach creates a valuable resource that documents regional ecological diversity and supports long-term stewardship of campus landscapes.

A Community Effort
More than 30 participants from the system contributed to this effort, including faculty, staff, students, community members, and external partners. The initiative was led by Ruth McDonald, an adjunct ESOL professor at LSC-CyFair, whose vision initiated and guided its development.

A Model for Sustainability
The arboretum reflects the ecological transitions of the region, featuring a wide range of native and adapted tree species. In a rapidly urbanizing environment, these landscapes contribute to heat mitigation, habitat support, and climate resilience. Campuses also feature walking trails, community gardens, and a Moon Tree grown from seeds flown on a NASA mission.

A Resource for Students
The project supports course-based activities, student projects, and co-curricular engagement, making it an interdisciplinary resource for students across various programs. The arboretum is being actively developed as a shared, living resource that strengthens the system's ability to grow and support student learning.

This Level II accreditation marks a significant milestone in the Lone Star College System's commitment to education, sustainability, and community engagement. As the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area, LSCS continues to redefine the community college experience, providing high-quality, low-cost academic transfer and career training education.
