Honors Students Shine at National Model United Nations Conference
Imagine being part of a team that brings together students from diverse backgrounds to tackle real-world challenges. For a group of Lone Star College System (LSCS) honors students, this was more than just an academic experience – it was a life-changing journey.A Life-Changing Experience
For Frank Atienza Coronado, a student at LSC-Tomball, the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference was a defining moment. 'There will never be any other experience like NMUN because to think that people who come from very different walks of life end up in the same room showed me a side of humanity that I've never seen before,' he said. This sentiment echoed among his peers, who were equally inspired by the conference's unique blend of academic rigor and cultural exchange.
Preparing for Success
The LSCS honors program is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their chosen fields. Casey Garcia, speech and humanities professor and head coach of the LSCS Model UN team, emphasized that students spend months preparing for the conference, honing their research, diplomacy, and debate skills. 'In the National Model United Nations team, we are taught the skills and mentality needed to win the conference months before it even commences,' Frank Atienza Coronado noted.
A Team Effort
This year's attendees included students from various LSCS colleges, each bringing their unique perspectives and strengths to the table. 'Through countless hours of hard work and commitment, we are set apart from others by taking the lead in diplomacy and collaboration,' Frank Atienza Coronado said. The team's dedication paid off, as they made a lasting impact at the conference.
A Lasting Legacy
The LSCS honors program has a proven track record of producing successful alumni who go on to pursue careers in law, creative writing, and political science. 'I've had students who have gone into law, creative writing and political science, who say they wouldn't have done that without the program because it forced them to break out of their shell and realize how consequential someone's voice can be,' Casey Garcia said. This legacy continues to inspire new generations of students.
The LSCS honors students' outstanding performance at the National Model United Nations conference is a testament to the program's effectiveness in shaping young minds and preparing them for success. As these students continue to make their mark on the world, they serve as a shining example of what can be achieved through dedication, hard work, and a commitment to excellence.
