Lone Star College System Celebrates Inaugural Alumni Awards
The Lone Star College System (LSCS) recently honored its most accomplished graduates at the inaugural Alumni Awards ceremony, recognizing individuals who have made a significant impact in their fields and communities. The event was held on May 2nd, where four outstanding alumni were awarded for their achievements.Alumni on the Rise Award Winners
The Alumni on the Rise Award recognizes individuals who have obtained a degree or certificate between May 1, 2020, and May 31, 2025. This year's winners were Mareeha Jangda and Brett Shryock. Mareeha Jangda graduated with an associate degree from LSC-Kingwood in 2022 and went on to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Technology in Cybersecurity. She is now a cybersecurity engineer at United Airlines, crediting her time at LSCS for providing her with valuable skills and connections that have propelled her career forward. Jangda expressed gratitude for the opportunities she received, stating, 'If I had gone the typical four-year route, I would not have been noticed as much, I would not have the connections I have now, and I would not have had opportunities like being able to speak at the UN about climate change.' Brett Shryock enrolled at LSCS while working for the Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management as a logistics specialist. He was among the first students to enroll in the college system's Bachelor of Applied Science in Emergency Management program and is now pursuing a master's degree in public service administration from The Bush School of Government & Public Service at Texas A&M University.
Distinguished Alumni Award Winners
The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes individuals who graduated before May 31, 2015. This year's winners were Meaghanne Ilene Logan Ruiz and John Fisher. Meaghanne Ruiz completed her associate degree at LSC-North Harris as an Honors College Scholar and transferred to the University of Houston to earn a bachelor's degree in political science. She went on to become an officer in the U.S. Air Force, earning a master's degree in cybersecurity management and policy, and launching her own defense innovation firm. Ruiz credits her time at LSCS for giving her opportunities to travel and sparking a curiosity about global affairs. John Fisher enrolled at LSC-Kingwood in 2006 and quickly got involved as a campus ambassador and student worker. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Houston-Downtown and has served as an officer with the Houston Police Department since 2019.

The inaugural Alumni Awards ceremony was held on May 2nd, where the winners were announced. Carolyn Donovan, LSCS associate vice chancellor, Alumni Relations & Engagement, praised the winners, stating, 'These influential alumni set powerful examples for our current and future students.' She noted that the winners demonstrate what it means to invest in their community with generosity, determination, resilience, and leadership.
