ICE's Despicable Tactic: Using a 5-Year-Old to Bait His Father

This Is America: JD Vance Defends ICE Using 5-Year-Old Liam Ramos To Bait His FatherIn a shocking display of inhumane treatment, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been accused of using a 5-year-old child as bait to detain his father. The disturbing incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about the agency's tactics.

A Despicable Tactic
According to reports, ICE agents removed 5-year-old Liam Ramos from his family's driveway after he returned home from preschool. They then used him as leverage to coax his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, out of their home and into custody. When the father finally surrendered, Liam was also taken away, despite the presence of his mother and another adult in the household.

A Questionable Claim
Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin claimed that parents are given a choice about taking their children or leaving them with another adult. However, Columbia Heights Public Schools Superintendent Zena Stenvik cast doubt on this assertion, stating that the family has an open asylum case and was never ordered to leave the country.

A Defense That Falls Flat
JD Vance, a prominent supporter of ICE's actions, defended the agency's tactics by suggesting that they are necessary to prevent children from freezing to death. However, this argument has been met with skepticism, as it implies that parents who have violated the law should be given immunity simply because they have children.

A Family's Plight
The Ramos family's story is a tragic example of the human cost of ICE's actions. Attorney Marc Prokosch, representing the family, stated that Liam and his father arrived at the Brownsville, Texas, port of entry in 2024, where they used the CBP One app to indicate their intention to seek asylum in the United States. They had followed all necessary procedures and were simply trying to secure safety from persecution in their home country.

The use of a 5-year-old child as bait by ICE agents is a despicable tactic that raises serious questions about the agency's treatment of families seeking asylum. As this incident highlights, the consequences of such actions can be devastating for those affected. It is essential to hold ICE accountable for its actions and ensure that families are treated with dignity and respect.
