Breaking Barriers: Mother-Daughter Duo Makes History at Rutgers' Psychology School
A Legacy of Sacrifice and Mentorship
Inez Phillips Durham's journey to earning her doctorate in psychology from GSAPP began over six decades ago, when she enrolled at the New Jersey College for Women in 1953 as one of only a handful of Black women in her class. Despite facing numerous challenges, including raising her daughter as a single mother after her husband passed away in 1975, Inez persevered and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1957, a master's degree in social work in 1961, and finally, her doctorate in psychology from GSAPP in 1984. Her unwavering commitment to education and her role as a mentor to her daughter have left an indelible mark on their family's history.
A Daughter's Inspiration
Jennifer Durham credits her mother's influence for inspiring her own pursuit of a career in psychology. 'When I considered going for my MSW, she encouraged me to go for my PsyD,' Jennifer recalled. 'It's the best decision I ever made.' Today, Jennifer is a professor at Rutgers, dedicated to reducing mental-health disparities among marginalized youth – a mission that closely aligns with her mother's own work as a psychotherapist and school social worker.
