Breaking Down Barriers: Black Women Reclaiming Pilates
A Chance Encounter
Amber's journey with Pilates began on a whim when she was offered the opportunity to manage a studio. With no prior knowledge of the practice, she was initially drawn in by its similarities to dance. However, it wasn't until she noticed the lack of diversity in the space that her curiosity truly sparked. 'I didn't see any people that looked like me in the space,' she recalls. This realization ignited a fire within her to learn more and eventually become an instructor herself.
Breaking Down Barriers
As a Black woman entering the wellness industry, Amber faced her own share of challenges. She often found herself standing out as the only Black person in a room at industry events. But instead of letting this discourage her, she used it as an opportunity to connect with others and build relationships. 'When I first moved to LA as a Pilates instructor, and I would get invited to events, I'd be the only Black person there,' she shares. 'And I went to HBCUs, so I'm not going to lie, I got culture shock a little bit.'
Creating a Safe Space
For Amber, representation and connection are at the heart of her approach to teaching Pilates. She makes sure to introduce students to one another in class, creating an icebreaker that helps beginners feel more comfortable. 'I feel like that's a nice icebreaker, especially because a lot of people come by themselves,' she explains. 'So it's like, okay, can I make a new friend?' This small gesture has made a significant impact on her students, who often arrive feeling nervous but leave with newfound confidence.
Pioneers and Role Models
Amber draws inspiration from pioneers like Kathy Grant, one of the first Black students of Joseph Pilates. 'I think Kathy Grant helped me just know that there is inclusivity in the practice,' she says. 'While it's only one person, she is somebody who's very pivotal in the practice.' This history serves as a reminder that representation in Pilates has always existed – even if it hasn't always been widely recognized.
Empowering Black Women
Amber's passion for Pilates extends beyond creating a safe space to educating her students about the physical benefits of the practice. For Black women, she emphasizes the importance of posture and core engagement. 'Working on lengthening our spine is something that's important,' she explains. 'In Pilates, you're going to get that education to help you be more engaged with your core and help you lengthen yourself.' As more Black women explore Pilates, Amber is helping to make the space feel less intimidating and more community-driven.
Amber Flowers' story is a testament to the power of passion and dedication. By breaking down barriers and creating a safe space for Black women to explore Pilates, she's changing the narrative one class at a time. As we continue to push for greater representation in the wellness industry, Amber's journey serves as a shining example of what can be achieved when we prioritize inclusivity and connection.
