Ibom Air Assault Case Not Same As KWAM 1 Incident, Says NCAA by treesun: 8:37am On Aug 12
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has said the incident involving Comfort Emmanson, the passenger who allegedly assaulted Ibom Air crew members, is different from the case of Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1.
NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mike Achimugu, stated this during an X Space session on Monday.
He explained that the regulatory body did not direct the airline to prosecute or ban Emmanson, noting that Ibom Air acted independently based on available evidence.
He said, “In this case, the airline exercised its rights to do what they needed to do, right? And AON, based on some of the evidences already available, because while the investigations are ongoing, you can still be working with what is available to you.
“Now, for you who say you are in the industry, when you see a passenger hitting a cabin crew member in the way the lady was doing, and the fight she had with the people who came to restrain her, you may have to agree that the airlines had every right to announce a ban.
“Yeah, of course, one would expect that at the end of all of these things, maybe the ban could be shortened or even removed altogether.
“But as of the moment, if they feel that that’s the right thing, because again, don’t forget, airline staff are also human beings, and they’re also fellow Nigerians.
“Some of them are your brothers and your sisters, too. And they deserve the same courtesy that passengers also deserve. Now, nobody deserves to be beaten up or hit in the manner that occurred in this flight.”
Achimugu said the Airline Operators of Nigeria acted within its rights, citing other past incidents where lack of evidence hindered regulatory action.
“Remember, there was an airport incident where three drunk people had mid-air between London and Nigeria, caused a situation that could have crashed that flight.
“To date, Air Peace feels aggrieved that nobody issued an advisory for those passengers to be blacklisted. But you see, evidence of what happened on board was not made available to the NCAA. So it became a case of he said, she said.
“I just want to put it out there very clearly that the NCAA did not issue an advisory to AON, and AON is within its right to ban any passenger, to blacklist a passenger. Just to make this clear,” he said.
He added that while Ibom Air swiftly charged Emmanson to court, ValueJet did not press charges in KWAM 1’s case, prompting NCAA to petition the authorities.
Achimugu stated that the airline has the right to pursue prosecution, adding that the matter could still be resolved amicably.
“Cabin crew are in charge of, apart from your comfort, safety and security and everything on the aircraft. We have the authority there. Blocking the path of somebody who has assaulted you is also a form of restraint.
“She wanted to restrain the passenger without laying hands on her, she’s within her rights to do so. I don’t know if it’s standard practice. I will have to check with director Afsek at the NCAA to check the documents and see. But look, there are different ways to restrain an unruly passenger. Standard practices can always evolve and change,” he concluded.

I'm not a fan of Kwam1 but I think I have to agree with NCAA that it's not the same incident. At least he didn't damage the aircraft or assault anyone.

On Ibom Air, same opinion as with Value Jet.
If you lack what it takes to be a professional and escalate or de-escalate issues without devolving into caveman antics or relying on your brute force or emotional outburst, then get out of professional spaces.
Two wrongs can never make a right.
Sometimes I get severely provoked by people I have to deal with and what I do is to take a step back and immediately escalate to a superior.
You cannot hold an individual hostage when you do not have the authorities to arrest or detain people.
If the issue had been ongoing and had been escalated to AvSec, the lady didn’t need to be held hostage or even arrested on the plane, anywhere on the airport grounds is sufficient to pull her aside and have a word with her. You can also reach out to her afterwards using the manifest if you do not have the powers to arrest people.
Not sure if the air hostess or air hostesses in general are given the authority to conduct citizen arrests when they are given their cute little skirts and ish but just like the pilot that left the cockpit to come and have a one-on-on with Wasiu, most of these issues are arising either because people do not know where to draw the professional line and where to stand (otherwise known over here as “above my paygrade”); or they have zero conflict resolution skills.
Also, was that lady stripped?
Lol.
Anyway, let us focus on the professionals that took a minute or two to act like agberos, are you all willing now to have a conversation about how and why professionals should have a rein on their emotions and watch their reactions in public?
Whatever the issue was was not properly de-escalated when it started; and that was why it spilled into that embarrassing show of shame - a flying passenger is a customer and should not be treated with condescension just because.
If they refused to turn off their phones or switch it to flight mode; then the aircraft should not have taken off until they were removed from it or if the decision was made to fly to destination with them and then remove them there, AvSec should have been waiting for the plane upon arrival and done the detention and arrest themselves so they can let her know what offense she was being held for BEFORE going ahead to detain her.
Anyway, hopefully she has good lawyers or will get good lawyers.
Ibom Air and its representatives were highly unprofessional.
What is wrong with Aviation in Nigeria this August sef?
PS: Are we still switching off phones to board flights? What is the “flight mode” option for? In this day and age where we can hold full blown conversations with our people who are flying long haul, a woman got stripped by an airline staff for not “switching off her phone”?
Lol!
PPS: Seriously people should know how to determine what is within and above their paygrade and refuse to involve themselves in anything above or below your paygrade; or not in your job description. I have said it here before: do YOUR job (when in doubt, check your job description), get paid, go home.
That’s all.
It is when you overstep the boundaries of your JD that you make all of these gaffes and expose yourself to the risk of losing the job you were trying to do too much to get noticed on.

Instead of them to just go and arrest wasiu and release him under bail so that Nigerians can be decieved into thinking our laws aren't biased they instead choose to try and whitewash their musical tingod as being free from stain or blemish
Yep . . . That is the power 💪 of Yoruba nepotism and lawlessness (according to an APC e-thug called factcheck01) hahaha 🤣😂

Kwam1 is not yet in jail because of govt connects. Boko haram and fulani herdsmen terrorists have not yet been eliminated because of govt support as well.
The highest form of injustice is selective justice.

You no go remove the ban ke. The double-standard is hilarious to see. So the best route is to let her off the hook, same as you did Wasiu and Adams.

Make of it what you want. Kwam 1 offense was of national security proportion. He stopped an airline from moving disrupting the aviation timeline and airspace control also holding 100s of passengers hostage because he was not allowed to fly.
Not making excuses for the young lady either but the event that played out is selective justice.

Keep making things worse for her ehn.
After she viciously beat up people and vandalized their properties, you still pretend not to get it ehn.
It's not your fault nah. It's how many of you were raised to reason that workers and the poor should be beaten and disgraced because they work for you and you can afford a jet lifestyle. Smh.
Thank God the two airlines released both statements and videos for reasonable people to watch, read and compare.
Her victims will still sue her for damages in a civil case and police now owns the case for her criminal prosecution.
PlasmaTV:
Please go and argue it with Ibom Air and her victims. Particularly that crew member that she forcibly tore off her wig, smashed her recommended eye glasses after slapping her several times.
Just imagine that that poor woman crew member she assaulted is your sister or mother or daughter or aunt. You will say it serves her right abi?
Upon arrival in Lagos, Ms. Emmanson waited for all other passengers to disembark and then proceeded to confront the Purser who had earlier instructed her. She walked up to the unsuspecting Purser, stepped on her, forcibly tore off her wig, removed her glasses and threw it to the floor, and used her footwear to assault her. She slapped her several times and when the other cabin crew member tried to intervene, she slapped her too. She then attempted to forcibly remove a fire extinguisher to use as a weapon, an act that could have damaged and grounded the aircraft.
By this time, the Pilot-in-Command had alerted airport security. Before security could arrive, the Purser as seen on the viral video on the internet, prevented the passenger from leaving the aircraft until security arrived. The arrival of Ibom Air Security personnel, did not deter the passenger as she attacked them as well, lashing out violently at the security personnel. She was then restrained and removed from the aircraft by force. Even after disembarking, she continued to assault Ibom Air security personnel, and even slapped the ground supervisor.
The passenger was removed from the ramp and taken into custody by FAAN security and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation. [

Investigation is still ongoing yet you have banned the lady for life, make it make sense.
You couldn't even wait to get the report of your own investigation.
Kwam 1 case was classified as terrorism while the Kwam 2 badly behaved lady is a demeanor. Which of them should carry a heavier sentence?

Shameless people. Shame on you as an organization. You can only deceive and fool the gullible. Such a disgusting excuse.
Agreed that in that case the person hit the officials. The other case was even worse, with the person holding the aircraft, passengers and officials to ransom. In the two cases, the same airport security and police who arrested the lady, should have arrested the man instantly there. Offences should be called by the name and not painted to please leaders. Justice must not be selective. Valujet did not have to press charges. The Nigerian police should do the job, as appropriate laws are there to be applied. NCAA did not have to press charges as it was the duty of the FG, through the airport authorities to press charges against the offender. If the could so speedily charge the lady to court for assaulting officials, why not charge K1 or others for the matter to court for such conduct. The police have an offence called “conduct likely…”, as they always confidently call it.
